She said many of the teachers were friends of the school board members and the people they grew up with. As of 2 July, about 80 teachers have been informed that they will be dismissed for the coming school year. „State aid cuts of 5% or less would allow the county to meet 100% of its contractual obligations and no wage increases would be deferred. An agreement would also have neondated the need for redundancies,“ he said. While the negotiating teams have reached an agreement, we are convinced that the statutes of the Bay Shore Classroom Teachers` Association require a favourable vote from the Board of Directors before members vote. School officials said an agreement was needed if Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo`s state aid was cut because of the coronavirus pandemic. Cuomo talked about possible reductions of 50% and 20%. According to the association`s communication, the agreements will allow the borough to better absorb these possible reductions. Andrew Arcuri, vice-president of the Bay Shore Board of Education, said budget issues and teacher overruns were solely attributable to the COVID 19 pandemic. The resolution passed is almost identical to the original agreement that was first proposed to the BSCTA board of directors, Arcuri said, but now contains a non-financial clause. Mr.
Gargan thanked community members for their reactions and emails expressing concern about teacher layoffs. She spoke personally about the decision to dismiss about 80 teachers in the county. „Anyone who has had the contract, including every teacher in this district, has the right to wait for the strict compliance of any length of time in his contract and to insist,“ Said Arcuri. „Budgetary issues and teacher exaggeration are due solely and exclusively to the COVID 19 pandemic – it was not and is not mismanagement, and it is certainly not the result of a crime, in fact, a crime.“ The borough did not respond to the emails by asking how many teachers had been dismissed and from which schools and areas. It also did not respond to a request for savings from the move. The negotiating teams had agreed between the staff and the county, but the statutes of the teachers` association required the approval of the board of directors before a vote of the members as a whole.
